Aluminium boats
By Bob Wonders
The humble (and not so humble!) 'tinnie' holds a special place in the hearts of recreational boaters.
From car-toppers to dinghies, punts to sport fishing rigs. cuddy cabins to sportboats, Australia's aluminium boat manufacturers produce an almost bewildering array of craft to suit many applications.
And for a dash of patriotism, I can say this: I have seen aluminium boats from manufacturers in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and several European countries and the boats produced right here in Australia are the equal of if not superior to anything in the world.
The top manufacturers include Telwater (parent company of dominant brand names Quintrex and Stacer), Horizon, Blue Fin and Ally Craft.
None could be faulted for their design or build integrity.
So what does the aluminium boat offer that leads to its widespread popularity?
The benefits of aluminium boats
There are several factors involved, one of the most important being weight.
An aluminium boat is considerably lighter than a fibreglass boat of the same or similar size. This gives the 'tinnie' three major advantages; its lighter weight means less horsepower (which leads to lower fuel consumption) for similar performance, it is easier to launch and retrieve and, finally, anyone's family sedan is capable of hauling the rig on the road and up and down boat ramps.
Maintenance, too, comes into play. The best friend of a 'tinnie' is fresh water; wash 'em down after use and that's it. No need to apply 'elbow grease' and fibreglass cut and polish to a 'tinnie.'
What to look for when buying an aluminium boat
Like the decision to purchase any form of boat, a prospective buyer needs to be aware of budget and needs. Like all consumer goods, you get what you pay for, so don't over commit when it comes to the budget.
Importantly, however, the decision must be based on application; keen anglers will opt for the various specialised sport fishing boats available from most manufacturers. The boating family will more than likely opt for the bow rider or cuddy cabin style of boat. Big boat owners will lean towards dinghies, even car toppers, as tenders to their other craft. Whatever your need, one of Australia's aluminium boat manufacturers will have the boat you need.
Power for aluminium boats is invariably outboard or, in the larger models, stern drive. A dealer will be able to offer the right advice as to the horsepower or style of engine required for the boat of your choice.
Look for a BIA logo at your local dealer – this signifies that the dealership is a member of its State Boating Industry Association and it's your guarantee that you're dealing with an ethical organisation.
So what are you waiting for? Jump aboard – your 'tinnie' is waiting.
