Help: Tips on bidding

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to bidding strategies, however these tips may help you get an edge over competing bidders.

Smart bidding

  • Offer the maximum amount you are willing to pay
Auto-bidding makes it easier and less time consuming for you to bid on an Auction.
The auto-bidder places incremental bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid when other bidders place a bid.
Whoever wins the Auction may end up paying less than the maximum amount they specified.
  • Don't bid on multiple Auctions for identical items
    You could win them all!
You will be legally obliged to buy all items for which you are the winning bidder. Bid on the Auction that is due to finish first and wait to see whether you win before you bid on the next Auction.
  • Set an odd limit
Consider setting your maximum bid at an uneven number (e.g. $12.67 instead of $12). Many buyers opt out of auctions at even numbers or make small bids to try and outbid you without paying any more than they have to.
  • Go with your gut
If something seems too good to be true, it might be. Don’t buy something you’re uneasy about or from someone you’re not comfortable dealing with. See our tips on safe trading.
  • Factor in delivery and handling costs
Delivery and handling costs are usually charged on top of the purchase price. Check what the seller is charging for delivery and handling. Factor it in when you are working out how much you are willing to pay for the item.

Talking to the seller

  • Keep records of all communication
This is particularly important if you and the seller have agreed on an alternative method of payment or delivery, or if there are issues with completing the sale. Communication through Question & Answers will be saved in Ad Tools®
  • Only communicate with sellers via tradingpost.com.au
Communicating via tradingpost.com.au helps ensure your personal information and ensures that any 2nd Offers or communications you receive are genuinely from a Trading Post seller.
  • Become a Verified Trader
