Activation

The process of verifying your details and your Trading Post® registration.
After you register, we’ll send you an email to your registered email address outlining what you need to do to activate your profile.

Activation code

A unique code sent to you via email that allows you to activate your profile when registering.

Ad Package

Trading Post® offers a range of ad packages to choose from when you create an ad on tradingpost.com.au. The package you choose will determine the cost of your ad and what ad package features are included.

Ad package features

The features that are included or available through your chosen ad package when you create an ad on Trading Post® (eg. any special ad formats).

Add pictures

Adding pictures involves uploading pictures (via your computer) to use in your Trading Post® ad. You may use as many pictures as you like up to the maximum specified by your ad package.

Ads

An Auction, advertisement or announcement that is placed on Trading Post® or in a Trading Post® publication.

Anti-spam filters

Software that helps block or filter spam before it reaches you.

Anti-spyware

Software that aids in removing and disabling existing spyware and helps to prevent the installation of spyware in the future.

Anti-virus

Software that helps protect your computer against malware such as viruses, worms and Trojans.

Attributes & features

Features that apply specifically to an individual item (eg. Power Steering, automatic transmission).

Auctions

Auctions are a method of selling online where a seller lists their item and allows buyers to compete for the sale by placing bids. Highest bidder wins.

Autobidding

The bidding system used for Auctions on Trading Post®, where Trading Post® automatically places incremental bids on a buyer’s behalf, up to that buyer’s maximum bid.

Ban a buyer

Banning a buyer is a step taken by a seller to prevent a buyer (or group of buyers) from buying or bidding on an item they’re selling on Trading Post®.

Bidder

A person who bids on an auction item on Trading Post®.

Bidding history

A list of all bids placed on an Auction that outlines the bid amounts and the corresponding buyer IDs.

Bid withdrawals

The cancellation of a bid by a buyer. Strict rules apply to withdrawing bids.

Bids/Bidding

A price offer made by a buyer to purchase an item being auctioned on Trading Post®.

Bought/won

A record of items you have bought on Trading Post®. You can see your bought/won list by logging in to My Trading Post.

Buy Now

Buy Now is a method of selling online where a seller sets a fixed, non-negotiable price for their item.

Buyer

Someone who buys or is interested in buying an item via Trading Post.

Cancellation history

A list of bids on an Auction that have been cancelled. It shows when and why the bids have been cancelled and the bidders Username.

Cancelling bids

When a seller cancels and removes all bids placed by a specific buyer.

Card reader

A device that reads and translates information stored on a card’s barcode, smartchip or magnetic strip.

Category

A group of common items being advertised via Trading Post® (eg. Household, Sport, Cars). Trading Post uses categories to help buyers find items advertised via Trading Post®.

Checkout

The step the successful buyer takes to kick off the transaction process.
Checkout refers to specifying the method of payment and delivery, not actually paying for the item.

Classified Ad

Classified ad is a method of advertising online.
The seller advertises a price and buyers may contact the seller direct to negotiate and arrange purchase and delivery.

Community

Community is collection of forums on Trading Post® where buyers and sellers can place notices or seek help and information from other Trading Post® members.

Counterfeit items

A counterfeit item is an illegal imitation of an item designed to misleadingly represent and be used in place of the real one (eg a fake coin or piece of currency).

Current bid

The highest successful bid on an Auction so far.
To be successful, the highest bid must exceed the Auction start price, the reserve (if a reserve applies) and any bids placed by other buyers.

Cybercrime

Broadly describes criminal activity in which computers or networks are either a:
tool
target, or
place of criminal activity.
Common forms of cybercrime are identity theft and financial fraud.

Dealer

Someone who buys and sells goods usually within in a particular field (eg, cars, art, antiques).

Didn’t win (in My Trading Post®)

A record of items for which you placed bids on tradingpost.com.au, but were not the winning bidder. You can check the list of items you Didn’t win by logging in to My Trading Post®.

Draft ads

An ad that a seller saves as a draft in My Trading Post® to come back and complete or list later.

Duration

The period of time a seller chooses (3, 5 or 7 days) to:

  • run their Auction or
  • list their Buy Now ad.

End time

The date and time an Auction is due to end.

Escrow

A third party that:

Once the escrow service is satisfied that the transaction is genuine, they release payment to the seller and the goods to the buyer.

Feedback & Ratings

Feedback & Ratings is a system that members on Trading Post® use to:

  • rate and provide feedback on other buyers and sellers they have transacted with
  • build a reputation within the Trading Post® community
  • check another trader’s feedback and ratings.

Formatting photos

Preparing a digital image for use on tradingpost.com.au (eg cropping, resizing and converting to the required JPEG file type). See how to resize photos.

Fraud

Intentional deception that results in injury, loss or damage (often financial) to another person. See reporting fraud.

Full online description

The description of your item that appears on Trading Post®.
If you choose to advertise in print, you may need to create an additional description to appear in your chosen Trading Post publication.

Get Noticed! package One of the ad packagesoffered on Trading Post®.

Identity (ID) theft

ID theft is the theft of important pieces of your personal information that allows someone else to pretend to be you, usually for criminal purposes, such as:
accessing your finances
opening bank accounts or taking out loans in your name
committing an illegal offence in your name.

Item description The description of your item that appears on Trading Post®.

Items of Interest

Items of Interest are ads that you save in My Trading Post® so you can come back and look at them later.

Listing

An ad on Trading Post®.

Listing activity

A summary of all ads you have placed on Trading Post® and the associated fees.
You can find your Listing activity in your profile information in My Trading Post®.

Listing fee

A listing fee is the initial fee charged to place a Classified ad.

Listing quota

Your listing quota is the number of Buy Now ads or Auction <4.2.2> you may place free of charge (either 50 ads or 5 times your previous month’s sales whichever is greater)

Mark as sold

A way of reporting to Trading Post® that your Classified item has been sold. Marking your ad as sold will automatically remove it from Trading Post®.

My Messages

My Messages is an area of My Trading Post® dedicated to storing messages sent to you from other members of the Trading Post® community.

My Preferences

Your preferences allow you to indicate:

  • what you want to be notified about when you are buying or selling
  • the payment & delivery methods you will accept for items you sell
  • what information you wish to receive from Trading Post.

Setting your preferences saves you the trouble of entering the information each time you buy and sell on Trading Post®.

My Profile

This where all your personal details are recorded in My Trading Post®, including your address, phone number(s) and email address.
Go to your profile to check and update your details to help ensure any sales or purchases you make on Trading Post® run smoothly.

Not sold items

A record of Auction and Buy Now items you listed on Trading Post® which didn’t sell. You can use a Not Sold listing to relist your item. Read our tips for relisting not sold items.

Outbid

You are outbid when a bidder offers a higher price than the previous bidder.

Password

Passwords on Trading Post® are designed to help protect your account and your personal details.
Trading Post passwords:

  • must be between 8 and 20 characters
  • must contain a combination of numbers and letters
  • are case sensitive.

Phishing

A form of cybercrime that involves pretending to represent a usually well-known or trusted organisation and sending misleading or bogus emails (called phishing or spoof emails) to pressure victims into submitting personal or financial details which are captured and forwarded to a phisher.

Print description

The description of your item that will appear in your chosen Trading Post publication when you place a print ad.

Question & Answers

Allows a buyer and seller to communicate with each other safely via Trading Post® (regarding an Auction or Buy Now item) without the need to disclose contact details.

Relist ad

Relisting is when a seller readvertises an expired ad or listing.

Renew ad

Renew allows you to extend your Classified ad, free of charge, if your item has not yet sold, provided you do so before your ad expires.

Reserve price

The minimum amount a seller is willing to accept for their Auction item.
Reserve prices are different to an auction’s start price. Sellers must set a start price for all Auctions, however setting a reserve price is optional.

Resizing photos

Changing the physical size or file size of a digital photo by either cropping or adjusting the image quality. See how to resize photos.

Scam

A scam is an attempt to intentionally mislead someone, usually for the purpose of financial or other gain.

Search

A way of finding ads on for particular items.
There are several different ways to search on Trading Post®.

Search results

A list of ads and listings that match your search requirements.

2nd Offers

Allows sellers to offer an Auction item to a non-winning bidder if the sale with the highest bidder falls through.

Secret question

A hint to remind you of your password if you forget it. You need to specify a password hint when you register to use Trading Post®.
Trading Post will email your password hint to your registered email address if you forget your password.
Under no circumstance will we email your password, so choose a hint that is guaranteed to jog your memory but will not make your password easy for someone else to guess.

Sell similar

Allows you to re-use an ad (current or expired) to create an ad for similar item.

Selling Method

Trading Post offers 3 different selling methods to allow you to sell in a way that suits you:

  1. Classified – set a price and allow buyers to contact you direct to negotiate on the price and delivery
  2. Buy Now – sell online at a fixed price
  3. Auction – let buyers compete online for the purchase of your item by placing bids.

You simply choose the method that suits you when you create your ad on Trading Post®

Selling price

The price a successful buyer agrees to pay for an item either by placing a bid or buying a Buy Now item.

Standard package One of the ad packages offered on Trading Post®.

Starting price

The minimum bid (set by the seller) to start an Auction.

Subtitle

A brief description of your item.
Short descriptions are used for keyword searches along with ad titles, so providing a good short description will help buyers find your item.

You can also display your short description in the search results with your title to help encourage buyers to look at your ad.

Success fee

A success fee is fee charged for Auction or Buy Now listings and that is only charged if the item sells.
Success fees do not apply to Classified ads.

Suspension

Suspension of your account on Trading Post® may be temporary or indefinite. Review the circumstances under which your account may be suspended and read Trading Post’s® Terms of Use for complete details.

Title

The heading for your Ad.
Your title appears in a Search results list and at the top of your ad.

TraderPro

TraderPro is an advanced online trading tool that helps you list, manage and sell multiple items simultaneously.

Transaction history

A summary of where your transaction is at for an item you have bought or sold on Trading Post®.
Your transaction history allows you to track what steps have been completed (ie. checkout, payment, delivery and feedback) and what needs to happen next.

Trust & Safety

Trading Post’s® Trust & Safety team is responsible for promoting a safe trading environment on Trading Post®. This includes:

  • detecting and preventing fraud and other criminal activities on Trading Post®
  • operating systems that:
    • discourage criminal and dishonest behaviour, and
    • allow members of the Trading Post® community to work together to prevent and warn others of scams, criminal activities and unreliable traders
  • working closely with law enforcement and government agencies, including the Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce.

Username

The unique online name (alias) other traders see when you buy, sell or communicate on Trading Post®.
You choose your username when you register to use tradingpost.com.au.

Value package

One of the ad packages offered on tradingpost.com.au.

Verified Trader™

A Verified Trader is a trader whose identity has been checked and verified by Australia Post.

Withdraw bid

When a buyer removes a bid they have placed on an auction.
Strict rules apply to withdrawing bids.
