Help: How to create an effective ad

  1. Let’s begin with a title

Your title is the first thing a potential buyer will see, so make it short, sharp and concise. 'Country Road leather couch' is far more descriptive and enticing that 'Six seater for sale'.
  2. Include a subtitle

Your subtitle will appear in search results and is a chance to squeeze a little more information into that all-important initial viewing. Summarise the important features of your item – eg; 'Six seater, L-shape, brown'
  3. Tell your buyers more

    Keywords:
You say lounge, I say couch. Put yourself in a potential buyer’s shoes – what terms might they search for when looking for your item. You might be selling a ‘six seater’ but is it a mini-van, a spa or a couch?

    The fine details
Describe your item in great detail – to avoid time-wasters lay it bare, warts and all:
    • What are you selling?
    • What brand is it?
    • Colour and material?
    • How old is it?
    • New or used condition?
    • Where’d you purchase it?
    • Does it have any faults, scratches etc?
    • Measurements?
    • Why are you selling it?
  4. Choosing a category

Self-explanatory, really. If you’re selling a couch, no one will find it under Pools & Spas. We have an extensive selection of categories on site and it’s best to be specific. If you’re unsure which category your item falls under, have a look around the site at similar listings.
  5. Picture paints a thousand words

You’ve got 9 photos at your disposal so get snapping!

    DO
    • Take photos from various angles
    • Avoid background distractions – plain is best
    • Show scale for smaller items
    • Use sufficient lighting – bad lighting can detract from your item.
    • Set your camera to high resolution – for example 1024x768 pixels or larger.
    DON'T
    • Don’t use old images – if your car is 5 years old it doesn’t look like the day you bought it
    • Don’t copy images from other sellers or sites
    • If you’re selling your car, don’t use a photo of tyre tread as your main image

  6. You want how much?

Are you asking a reasonable price for your item? Have a look around at similar items and other people’s asking prices. Take into consideration an older, more-worn item will probably sell for less than a newer version of an identical item.

If your price is negotiable, let potential buyers know.

If you’re selling a car, refer to Glass’s Guide for car valuations.
  7. Share your ad

When you list an ad online be sure to spread the word via social media! Next to an ad’s images you will see the option to share via Facebook, Twitter and a host of other social media.

    Social Media Icons

The average social media user has 195 online friends, so if you share your ad, and just one friend also shares your ad, that’s a potential 390 sets of eyes on your item.

Make social media sharing something you do for every ad you list – a little self-promotion can go a long way.
  8. Upgrade your ad

For a little extra you can upgrade your ad from a Standard to a Get Noticed package and get the following benefits:
    • Priority listing
    • Blue highlighted background
    • 12 month ad duration
    • List until sold
