Help: How to place an ad for a car or motorbike

When you’re completing the form to place your ad, you must complete all the fields that have a red asterisk like this *. All other fields are optional, but the more information you provide the better your chances of selling.

Basic information about the vehicle

The first thing you need to do is to complete the basic information about your vehicle. This includes registration, make, model and year. These details are already available in drop down menus. If you’re unsure of any of the details, check your vehicle's manual for this information. If you've lost your manual ask your mechanic. For motorcycles this section is slightly different, because it refers to bikes. But it works in the same way.

Adding basic information about the vehicle

When you have selected the model, a new section will appear with the optional features of that model, like below's example. Check the ones your vehicle has installed and they will appear in your ad.

Setting the price

When you’ve selected your vehicle type, you’ll see that a lot of the information is already filled in the form fields. We do this to help save you time. We will also suggest a price to you, based on the market value of your vehicle. We get this price from Glass's Guide. You don’t have to accept this price. If your vehicle is in excellent condition, or is very run down, you might consider setting a price that is higher or lower. In the example below, we entered a 2004 Saab 9-5 sedan. You can see how the system helps you to price your vehicle.

Write your description

When you write your description, be realistic and concise. It helps to include:

  • The number of owners
  • How long you've owned the vehicle
  • Time left on the warranty
  • Your reason for selling
  • Whether you are willing to travel to the buyer to show your vehicle
  • The service history
  • Any customisations, extras or unique selling points

Adding pictures

We have a tool to help you upload your pictures. It looks like this:

Adding Pictures

You must be able to access the pictures from your computer. Pictures should be in jpg, bmp, tif, gif or png format, and be no more than 10mb in size.

Click on the "Browse" button and locate the picture you want on your ad. Then double click on the picture to load it into the ad.

The main picture is the one that will appear as a small image in the results when someone searches for your item, and also as the biggest picture on your ad.

Tip: It's a good idea to add as many pictures as you can. This attracts buyers, and helps them make informed decisions.
Removing pictures

Removing pictures

You can add or remove pictures at any time. To remove pictures, click on the red "Remove" link next to each photo.

Change the order pictures

To change the order of pictures, click on an image and drag it where you want it to go. It’s that easy.

Tip: Consider the order in which you would like your pictures to display. Presenting pictures in a logical order may give buyers a better understanding of your item. For example, you might show a front shot, followed by a different angle and finish with close-ups of any detail or flaws.

Contacts and location

It’s a good idea to include a couple of phone numbers – like a daytime number and your mobile phone number. You don’t want to miss any calls!

We have security on the site to ensure that your number can’t be harvested by software and added to spam lists. But you can find out more about SMS scams here.

The easiest way to add your location is to include your postcode and then select an option from the drop down menu. Sometimes it can take a few seconds to appear, so be patient before you move to the next step.

Saving a draft and next steps

When you’ve completed the form, you can save a draft of your ad, or click “checkout” to take you the next step - registration and payment.

If you save a draft, you will have 48 hours to complete and submit your ad before the draft is deleted from the system. We do this in order to protect your privacy.

To access a draft, you need to log in to your Ad Tools, and your ad will be saved on the left under "Draft ads".
