Help: Issues with buyers

Unfortunately, sales don’t always go to plan, even when someone has agreed to buy from you. If you’re having trouble completing a sale, we suggest you follow the steps below in the order listed.

  1. Stay calm
Losing your cool will get you nowhere fast. Remaining calm will help you achieve a better outcome much faster.

  2. Negotiate a fair solution
Do your best to make contact with the seller and work with them to come up with a solution you can both agree to.

  3. Use feedback & ratings
Trading reputation is important in attracting buyers and sellers, which is why the feedback & ratings system works so well. So go ahead… be as honest as you can and comment on your experience with the seller. And while we can understand your frustration, please leave out any offensive remarks or language.

  4. Sell your item to another buyer
Consider selling your item to someone else. You can relist a Buy Now item or, send a 2nd Offer to sell to another bidder on your Auction item.

  5. Raise a dispute with Trading Post®
If you have had a good crack at working with the buyer but still can’t resolve the issue, you can raise a dispute You must do it within 30 days of the selling date. Trading Post® will remain neutral throughout the entire process.

  6. Banning
You can ban this member from buying or bidding on items you sell in the future. Remember, banning is not about revenge; it’s about protecting you from the same unreliable traders in future.

Communication between traders
Buyers and sellers should always have a go at resolving an issue with each other before doing anything else.

Extra tips for specific situations

  1. Can’t contact the buyer

We reckon 5 business days is a reasonable amount of time to allow the buyer to contact you.
If you’re getting edgy, the following things are okay during this time.

    • Email the buyer to let them know you are ready to complete the sale.
    • Check your email settings, particularly if you or your ISP use a spam filter, to make sure you receive their email.
    • Send the buyer an email from an alternative email address.
If after 5 business days the buyer has not been in touch, you might want to:

Don't forget to use feedback & ratings to comment on your experience with the buyer.

    Buyer refuses to buy
A buyer is obligated to purchase the item from you at the agreed price and subject to any agreed payment and delivery terms if they win the Auction, accept a 2nd Offer or commit to a Buy Now item.

Most buyers will want to resolve the situation to retain a good online reputation… even if they no longer want the item. So use the steps above and try to work with the buyer to come to a fair agreement.
