Help: Business obligations
Displaying ads as a business
If your ad relates to items you sell through your business or services your business provides, you should display your business details in your ad.
In Victoria and Tasmania you are required by law to identify your business in your ad. For each of your ads, you must include your business name and at least one of the following:
- business address
- business registration number
- business license number.
Non-business selling for profit
If you have not set yourself up as a business for tax purposes and/or do not have a registered business name, and you are selling items on an ongoing basis to make money, you must list your ad as a business.
Trading Post® reserves the right to list your ad as a business if we determine you are engaging in ongoing buying and/or selling activity to make money/profit.
Common examples of this practice are animal breeders who consistently advertise new animals, or recurring ads for identical items from the one seller.
If you make reference in your classified ad to an external email or URL address we may deem you to be a business and list your ad as a business.
Displaying your business details in Classified ads
Sellers wishing to include business details in a Classified ad should choose to display their ad as a business by identifying their business details in the appropriate fields.
Sellers who do not select to display their Classified ads as a business are prohibited from including references to their business in their ad description, including but not limited to:
- Business Name
- Business Phone Number
- Business Street Address
- Business Email Address
- URL's
When you select to display your Classified ads as a business, your ad:
- will run for four weeks online
- cannot be renewed for free
Where do I provide my business details?
When you create your ad, you are able to supply your business details on the last step, Review and Submit.
Tick the check box Display as a business and enter your business details.

Other business obligations
Like all other Trading Post advertisers, you are responsible for:
- complying with the Terms of Use, including rules about Prohibited Content, and
- ensuring that your ads are not in breach of any laws or legislation.
Legal requirements for advertising as a business
The Victorian Fair Trading Act Section 29 requires businesses to identify themselves in their ads by publishing the:
- name and/or address of the business
- business registration or license number, or
- business name registration number
