Help: Identifying fake items

The internet is a common place for people to sell counterfeit items such as software, DVDs, CDs, antiques, collectibles, handbags, designer clothing, jewellery and other accessories.

To make sure you’re buying the real thing, take some to carefully review the ad and research the seller before bidding or buying.

How can I tell if the item is a fake?

Here are some tips to identify a counterfeit item.

Check whether:

  • the cost of the item is well below market value
  • the seller:
    • has multiple listings for the same item for sale
    • has feedback from other buyers that advises the items are fake
    • avoids questions about the authenticity of the item or the origin of the item.

How can I check an item is genuine?

To help you check for authenticity before you buy:

  1. Ask the seller for proof of authenticity
Ask the seller for proof of authenticity and ownership – such as certificates, warranty cards, receipts and serial numbers. You should also attempt to verify this information with the source.
  2. Check that the seller has the item
Be wary of sellers who do not have the item in their possession or you are told the item will be delivered from another location.
  3. Research the seller
Check their feedback to see if other members have reported receiving counterfeit items.
  4. Check the ad carefully
Be wary of listings that use words like “authentic copy” or “genuine imitation”. Some listings may even refer to the brand name as a copy, such as "Chanel like" or "Gucci style". Spend time researching the item so you know what to look for.
  5. Make sure you can return it if it’s not genuine
Before purchasing an item ask the seller what their refund or return policy is in the event the item is not legitimate or what you expected.
