Ah, the 1996 Bathurst 1000: Mount Panorama serving 161 laps of chaos and heroics, as usual.
Craig Lowndes and Greg Murphy won for the Holden Racing Team in a Commodore, giving Lowndes his first Great Race victory and a legend-making weekend.
Ford fans grumbled, Holden fans roared, and the mountain kept a poker face while Skyline and The Dipper tried to terrify brake pads.
Strategy, safety cars, and fearless overtakes wrote the script; the 1000 km distance merely provided the paper.
In short: big track, big heart, and a very good day to be wearing red.
