1997 mitsubishi pajero problems Page 3

The 1997 Pajero is a tough old unit, but three decades of adventures can leave some souvenirs. Expect age, use and maintenance to matter more than badges and bravado. The diesel 2.8 and the 3.5 V6 each have their party tricks, and the Super Select 4WD system likes a bit of TLC. Here’s what tends to go grumpy after 25+ years:

• 2.8TD (4M40): injection pump/front seal leaks causing hard starting, stalling or smoke; worn glow plugs; EGR soot.
• Cooling: clogged radiators or tired viscous fans leading to overheating; cook it and you risk head/gasket woes.
• 3.5 V6 (6G74): valve‑stem seals (oil use/smoke), lifter tick, and routine timing‑belt/cover seal service items.
• Super Select: flashing 4WD lights from actuator/vacuum solenoids or perished hoses; front freewheel clutch issues.
• Suspension/steering: idler arm and ball joints wear, control/trailing‑arm bushes, shocks, torsion‑bar sag.
• Rust and leaks: tailgate, rear arches, sunroof drains; plus alternators and window regulators getting cranky.

Get a thorough pre‑purchase inspection and budget for fresh fluids, hoses and bushes; parts are plentiful and not ruinous in Australia.
