1998 nissan navara 3.2 diesel problems Page 18

The 1998 Nissan Navara 3.2 diesel (early D22, QD32) is a tough old spanner, but time and kilometres still have their say.

Most gremlins are garden‑variety old‑diesel stuff rather than fatal flaws.

• Hard cold starts or smoke: tired glow plugs/relay or air leaks in the fuel system.
• Black smoke or rough idle: worn injectors, EGR soot, or a clogged intake.
• Diesel leaks: injection pump seals and spill lines weeping after decades of heat cycles.
• Overheating under load: clogged radiator, ageing viscous fan clutch, or mud blocking the fins.
• Steering play and shudders: worn idler arm, tie‑rod ends, and upper/lower ball joints.
• Driveline grumbles: clutch wear, noisy release bearing, and tired gearbox synchros.
• Rust watchpoints: chassis rails, tray mounts, sills, and cab corners.

Budget for fresh fluids, filters and maybe injectors, and it’ll happily chug to the moon and back—slowly.

If a test drive shows easy cold starts, clean shifts and stable temps, you’ve probably found a good one; get a pre‑purchase inspection to dodge expensive surprises.
