1998 toyota hilux problems Page 3

The 1998 HiLux is tougher than a pub schnitty, but age catches up with anything that’s hauled bricks since the GST was new. Here are the gremlins owners most often grumble about:

• 1KZ-TE 3.0 turbo-diesel: overheating and cracked heads if cooling is neglected or towing hard.
• Cooling system: tired radiators, viscous fan hubs, and water pumps leading to creeping temps.
• Front end/steering: worn bushes, ball joints, and steering play after corrugations and big tyres.
• Rust traps: chassis rails, tray seams, sills and roof gutters—especially country or coastal utes.
• Driveline: clutch wear, notchy synchros, diff whine, and the occasional rear main seal weep.

A pre-purchase inspection, compression test for diesels, and a crawl under the chassis for rust will save you a world of “should’ve known”. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
