2002 toyota hilux 3.0 diesel problems Page 6

The 2002 Toyota Hilux 3.0 diesel is a tough old roo, but time and heat still take their toll—especially on the turbo 1KZ-TE and even the 3.0 NA 5L.

• Cooling/overheating: tired radiators, viscous fan clutches and thermostats can lead to high temps and, on 1KZ‑TEs, cracked cylinder heads.
• Fuel system: worn injectors and pump seals cause hard starts, rough idle and smoke.
• Timing belt: overdue belts and idlers (both 5L and 1KZ‑TE) risk expensive collateral damage.
• EGR and intake soot buildup: loss of power and economy; a good clean and fresh filters work wonders.
• Driveline/suspension: front CVs and wheel bearings on 4x4s, clutches, and squeaky leaf springs after a life of corrugations.

Look for meticulous service history, stable coolant levels, and an easy cold start; get a compression test and cooling system pressure test if you’re serious. Parts are plentiful in Australia and repairs are straightforward, but budget like an adult, not an optimist.
