The 2003 Hilux is tough as old boots, but even boots split if you kick enough rocks.

The usual gremlins are more “age and use” than fatal flaws, yet worth a look before you hand over your hard-earned.

• Cooling system neglect leading to overheating; on diesels that can invite head troubles
• Worn front-end bits (ball joints, idler arm, CV boots) and sagged leaf springs from heavy loads
• Injector/pump wear on diesels, plus smoky starts from tired glow plugs
• Rust in chassis rails, tray seams and cab mounts—especially coastal cars
• Manual gearbox synchro wear and clutches that have had one too many trailers
• Electrical odds and ends: alternators, starters, faded earths

Get a pre-purchase inspection, cold start it, and budget for fluids, belts and bushes; prevention here is cheaper than new metal.

A clean service history and a calm cooling needle are the best signs you’ve found a keeper.
