The 2005 Holden Rodeo diesel (RA, 3.0 Isuzu) is a tough old workhorse, but time and kilometres expose the usual gremlins. Treat it well and it’ll tow, haul, and generally ignore your feelings while getting the job done.

• EGR and intake soot buildup causing sluggish response and black smoke
• Glow plugs and their relay failing, making cold starts grumpy
• Diesel leaks from injectors or pump, plus rough idle under load
• Split turbo hoses or sticky wastegate giving low boost
• Overdue timing belt and tired water pump risking an expensive day
• Cooling system age: radiators, viscous fan clutches, and heater cores
• Manuals: worn clutches and notchy synchros; 4x4 vacuum lines cracking
