2005 toyota hilux problems Page 4

The 2005 Toyota HiLux is tough as boot leather, but even heroes get shin splints. The standout headache on the diesel is the D-4D’s injector seats—when they leak, you’ll see messy “black death,” rough cold starts and, if neglected, oil pickup blockage that can end very badly. EGR and intake carbon build-up is common, choking performance like a snorkel full of sand. Expect typical ute gremlins too: clutch shudder, tailshaft centre bearing vibes, and CV boots if it’s had a mud-bath lifestyle. Keep servicing tight and it’ll keep soldiering on.

• Leaking injector seals (1KD-FTV): diesel smell, rattly cold starts, potential oil pickup blockage.
• EGR/intake soot build-up: hesitation and poorer economy; periodic cleaning helps.
• Clutch wear/shudder on manuals; dual-mass flywheel complaints under load.
• Driveline vibration: tailshaft centre bearing and universal joints.
• Front CV boots/ball joints and suspension bushes after rough use.
• Rust around tray/underbody if it’s seen beaches or salt.

Chase service records (injector seats, timing belt on diesels), start it stone-cold to listen for rattles, and get a pre-purchase inspection—cheaper than a new engine.
