2006 bmw x5 problems Page 3

By 2006 the BMW X5 was either a well-sorted late E53 or a very early E70, and both have their party tricks — some more entertaining than others.

Here are the commonly reported gremlins owners and mechanics see again and again:

• Cooling system fatigue: expansion tank, radiator, thermostat and water pump failures leading to overheating.
• Oil leaks: valve cover gasket and oil filter housing on sixes; alternator bracket gasket and valve stem seals on N62 V8s.
• Auto transmission and transfer case shudder or slip on units left on so-called lifetime fluid; diff whine isn’t unheard of.
• Front control arm bushes/ball joints and rear air suspension bags or height sensors (if fitted) wearing out.
• Electrical niggles: window regulators, central locking actuators, battery drains, and pixelated instrument clusters.
• Sunroof drains or panoramic cassettes that clog, inviting water into places it absolutely doesn’t belong.
• Diesel 3.0d: swirl flap risk on early intakes, EGR soot buildup, boost hose splits and tired glow plugs.

Get a pre-purchase inspection from a BMW specialist, verify service history (cooling system work is a big plus), and budget a contingency fund — serenity via preparedness.
