The 2006 Nissan X-Trail is a tough old bus, but age means a few gremlins worth spotting before you hand over the folding stuff.

• QR25DE intake “power valve” screws can loosen and get swallowed, causing misfires and engine damage.
• Pre-cat catalytic converter breakdown leading to oil consumption and check-engine lights.
• Crank/cam sensors and MAF issues causing rough idle, stalling, or hard starts (many were recalled).
• Wheel bearings and rear diff/viscous coupling noises at highway speeds.
• Rust in tailgate/rails and leaky sunroof drains; A/C blower resistor failures aren’t rare.

None are automatic deal-breakers, but walk away from blue smoke, misfires, or metal glitter in the oil. Verify recalls for crank/cam sensors and airbags via the VIN, and insist on a cold start plus a proper pre-purchase inspection. Do that and you’ll get bush tracks without the bush mechanics.
