The 2008 BMW X5 diesel (E70) is equal parts family bus and stubborn Bavarian, and age has added a few quirks you’ll want on your radar.

• EGR and intake carbon build-up, plus DPF clogging if it’s only driven on short trips.
• Oil leaks from rocker cover gasket, oil filter housing and vacuum pump.
• Boost leaks from turbo/intercooler hoses causing whistles or limp mode.
• ZF 6‑speed auto mechatronic sleeve/bridge seal leaks leading to harsh shifts.
• Transfer case actuator wear causing shudder or binding at low speed/full lock.
• Swirl flap wear in the intake on M57 engines; many fit reinforced flaps or delete kits.
• Cooling niggles: lazy thermostats, ageing hoses/radiator; overheating is rare but nasty.
• Rear air suspension bag/valve leaks and electrical gremlins (iDrive/CCC, parking brake module, door handle carriers, sunroof drains, battery/IBS).
