The 2008 Holden Barina is the sort of small hatch that gets the job done, but won’t write home about it unless it runs out of stamps. It’s light, easy to park, reasonably frugal, and just fine for city duties; take it on the highway and the cabin gets chatty with road noise. Ride and handling are competent rather than charming, and the interior plastics are sturdy in the same way milk crates are “furniture.” Safety and tech feel basic by today’s standards, so shop carefully and prioritise a clean service history over fancy hubcaps. When inspecting, keep an eye out for the usual used-car gremlins:

• Timing belt and water pump due on schedule; proof of replacement is gold.
• Oil leaks from cam cover and other weepy gaskets.
• Tired engine mounts causing vibration at idle.
• Power window/central locking quirks and other minor electrical niggles.
• Automatic transmission hesitation or rough shifts if servicing’s been skipped.

A well-kept Barina is cheap, cheerful transport; a neglected one will teach you new swear words.
