2009 ford focus problems Page 2

The 2009 Ford Focus is generally a sturdy little runabout, but age and Aussie heat can coax out a few habits. If you’re shopping one, assume it’s honest until proven otherwise—and then have a proper look.

• Automatic (4‑speed) can show rough shifts or delayed engagement; fluid changes help, neglect doesn’t.
• Ignition coils and spark plugs can cause misfires and rough idle; easy fix if caught early.
• Front control-arm bushes and sway-bar links wear, causing clunks and vague steering.
• Window regulators and door-lock actuators can get flaky; electrics may need TLC.
• Diesel models: DPF clogging and EGR issues if used mostly for short trips; check for warning lights and forced regens.
• Cooling leaks from thermostat housing or water pump aren’t unheard of—watch temps.

Look for full service history, test the gearbox hot and cold, and listen for suspension knocks over speed humps. A pre-purchase inspection is cheaper than gambling your weekend on “she’ll be right.”
