2009 holden barina common problems Page 2

The 2009 Holden Barina (TK) can be a thrifty runabout, but it does have a few gremlins worth peeking under the rug for.

Age and maintenance history matter more than odometer bravado, so a pre‑purchase inspection is money well spent.

Here are the usual suspects owners and mechanics report:

• Timing belt and water pump overdue or ignored, risking catastrophic failure.
• Ignition coils/leads and spark plugs causing misfires and rough idle.
• Thermostat housing and radiator/hoses weeping coolant; overheating if neglected.
• Engine mounts collapsing, leading to vibration at idle and on take‑off.
• Power‑steering pump or rack leaks and groans.
• Auto transmission harsh shifts/flare if fluid’s old; manual clutch wear and noisy release bearings.
• Front wheel bearings and suspension bushes wearing early; clunks over bumps.
• Electrical niggles: window regulators, central locking actuators, dash warning lights; occasional alternator failures.
• Air‑con compressor weakness and condenser leaks; lukewarm cooling.

Service history—especially timely timing‑belt changes and cooling‑system care—separates the keepers from the cry‑for‑help classifieds.
