2009 toyota kluger problems Page 4

The 2009 Toyota Kluger is generally as sturdy as a Bunnings snag, but time exposes a few gremlins worth sniffing out.

• VVT-i oil hose on early 2GR-FE V6s can rupture and dump oil—confirm it’s been updated to the all-metal line.
• Water pump seep/leak and occasional thermostat drama around 100–150k km.
• Front brake shudder from warped rotors; common, fixable, still annoying.
• Steering intermediate shaft clunk and tired engine mounts.
• Tailgate struts and door lock actuators going on strike.
• AWD models: rear diff/coupling noises if servicing’s been skipped; CV boots/shafts after a life of tight carparks.

Check full service history and any recall/TSB work, listen on cold start for odd ticks, and get a proper pre-purchase inspection.

Do that, and you’ll likely have a comfy family bus rather than a rolling to-do list.
