200 series auto transmission upgrade Page 5

Ah, the 200 Series Land Cruiser's automatic transmission—rugged, reliable, but not exactly a paragon of modern tech. Upgrading typically means swapping in a newer 6-speed or even 8-speed gearbox from later models or aftermarket kits to enhance fuel efficiency and smoothness. Benefits include improved gear ratios, better fuel economy, and a more refined drive, while drawbacks can be complex installation and higher costs. Expect to pay anywhere from a few thousand dollars for used parts up to $10,000 or more for professional conversions. Common issues with original transmissions include:

• Overheating under heavy load
• Delayed or harsh shifting
• Fluid leaks
