The 2010 Subaru Outback is a tough old wagon, but time has a habit of sneaking gremlins under the bonnet.

Before you fall in love with the dog-and-surfboard lifestyle photos, check for these usual suspects:

• CVT shudder/flare or hesitation; software updates, valve body work or proper fluid changes often fix it.
• 2.5L head gasket seepage (external oil/coolant); look for sweet smells, stains around the heads and mystery top-ups.
• Wheel bearing hum at highway speeds.
• Front control-arm bushes cracking, causing wandering and uneven tyre wear.
• Electronic parking brake warnings or failures (if fitted); repairs aren’t pocket change.
• Power steering and A/C compressor clutch wear or leaks, especially on hot-climate cars.

On the maintenance side, make sure the timing belt and water pump were done around 168,000 km; skipped history is a red flag.

Get a pre-purchase inspection and a long test drive—if it drives straight, stays cool and shifts smoothly, you’ve likely found a good one.
