2011 subaru forester problems Page 4

The 2011 Subaru Forester (SH) is generally tough, but a few gremlins are well known in Australia as the kilometres pile on.

• Early FB25 2.5-litre engines can suffer excessive oil consumption; look for documented top-ups, updated piston/ring fixes, and do a long test drive.
• Cold-start rattles from timing chain/tensioners on FB25; brief noise is common, prolonged clatter is not.
• Turbo XT models (EJ255) may show cooling system leaks or head-gasket seepage; watch temps and check for sweet smells or mayo under the cap.
• Front lower control arm bushes and wheel bearings wear; clunks, wandering, or cupped tyres are the tell-tales.
• Sunroof drains and tailgate seals can leak; lift the rear floor for dampness and sniff for mustiness.
• Air-con condensers and O2/MAF sensors can fail with age, causing weak cooling or rough idle.

The 4-speed auto is generally durable but can feel lazy; shuddering usually points to old fluid or tired mounts rather than doom. Listen for rear diff whine on overrun if fluids were neglected. Check service history (5,000–10,000 km oil changes) and verify recall work via VIN before you hand over the folding stuff.
