For Australian tax, the cents‑per‑kilometre rate for work car travel was 72 cents per km for both the 2020–21 and 2021–22 financial years.
You can claim up to 5,000 km per car using this method, and that single rate already covers fuel, servicing, tyres, rego, insurance and depreciation—so no double‑dipping.
Keep reasonable records of your work trips (date, purpose, distance), and skip the school run or servo dash, heroic though they may feel.
If you prefer spreadsheets and complexity, the logbook method may suit—but that’s a different barrel of admin.
