The 2022 Subaru XV is the last of the name before it morphed into “Crosstrek,” and it’s still the small SUV that actually likes dirt under its tyres. Standard AWD and about 220 mm of clearance give it real confidence on gravel and wet B-roads, while the ride is comfy enough to keep the coffee inside the cup. The 2.0‑litre boxer with a CVT is adequate rather than exciting—push it hard and it drones like a didgeridoo lesson gone long—while the Hybrid sips a touch less but not enough to justify itself for everyone. Cabin quality is solid, visibility is great, and you get Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, but the boot is on the tight side for weekend warriors with too many hobbies. Safety tech (EyeSight on autos) is generous, making it an easy daily that moonlights as an adventure buddy.
