a self-driving car that can drive in canberra Page 4

Short version: you can’t buy a true self-driving (Level 4/5) car in Australia yet, so none will legally whisk you around Canberra while you nap.

What you can get are advanced driver-assist systems (Level 2) like Tesla Autopilot, Hyundai/Kia Highway Driving Assist, and Toyota Safety Sense—useful, but they still require your hands, eyes and brain on duty.

The ACT does allow autonomous vehicle trials under permit, but that’s for tightly controlled testing, not everyday commuters playing passenger.

Any over-the-air update promising magic robo-chauffeuring is still bound by Aussie road rules, insurer realities, and the car’s sensors having a small panic at rogue roundabouts.

If you need point-to-point driverless travel today, call a rideshare; if you want cutting-edge assistance, buy a well-specced modern car and keep your licence handy.

In short: Canberra’s lovely, but you’ll be the driver for the foreseeable future.
