From Adelaide to Lake MacDonnell is roughly 870–900 km via the A1, about 9.5–10.5 hours of driving if you behave—plus snack stops and a selfie with the Big Galah at Kimba. The last few kilometres near Penong are unsealed and usually fine for a 2WD when dry; after rain they’ll redecorate your wheel arches nicely. Your best shot at the famous pink hue is after rain followed by sunny weather—it’s seasonal, so sometimes it’s more meh than magenta. Fuel and food are sensible at Port Augusta, Kimba, Wudinna, Ceduna or Penong, because the Nullarbor isn’t big on convenience. Check local road conditions and daylight, and aim for midday light for the strongest colour—nature has terrible mood lighting. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
