ADR 62 is Australia’s design rule for mechanical connections between vehicles—think towbars, tow couplings, drawbars, fifth-wheels and kingpins.

It sets performance, testing and marking requirements so the bits joining car and trailer don’t part company at the first corrugation.

Components must be rated and clearly labelled, and the vehicle–trailer pairing has to match those ratings, not whatever Uncle Kev reckons it’ll tow.

Compliance is typically to the current revision (ADR 62/02) and dovetails with state regulations and standards used for light and heavy trailers.
