An ADR compliance plate is the little metal tag that says your vehicle meets Australia’s Design Rules—our bureaucratic way of ensuring it stops, steers, and doesn’t explode.
It typically lists the VIN, build date, approval number, vehicle category, and sometimes GVM and seating capacity, and it’s usually found in the engine bay or a door jamb.
Since 2021, many new vehicles are recorded on the RAV (Register of Approved Vehicles), so the “plate” may be a label or just an electronic entry—the idea is the same: proof of compliance.
When buying, make sure the plate or label details match the VIN and rego, and that no one’s played arts-and-crafts with the rivets.
For imports and classics, missing or altered plates can mean registration grief and insurance headaches, so sort it before you fall for the shiny paint.
