Alan Jones is Australia’s 1980 Formula One World Champion, a blunt-force instrument in a Williams FW07 that preferred winning to small talk.

He notched a dozen Grand Prix victories, first with Shadow then with Williams, and made uncompromising speed look like an acceptable personality trait.

Son of 1959 Australian Grand Prix winner Stan Jones, he carried the family habit of going very fast and occasionally telling it like it is.

After F1 he dabbled in touring cars at home and did media work, still sounding like a man who’d rather be on pole.
