In Australia, many bank transfers are effectively instant thanks to the New Payments Platform (Osko/PayID) running 24/7 between participating banks.
Send within that network and it usually lands in seconds; step outside it, use an old BSB/account transfer, or trip a fraud check and you’re looking at delays.
First-time payees, large amounts, or transfers scheduled after a bank’s cut-off can be held for review, and inter-bank payments not on NPP may take 1–2 business days.
International transfers and some business batch payments are still the slow lane—think hours to days, not moments.
So yes, instant is common these days, but not guaranteed; the compliance robots get right of way.
