The Audi RS Q e-tron is Audi’s desert-bound science experiment that actually worked: it won the 2024 Dakar Rally with Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz.
It’s an electric off-roader with motors at both axles and a high-voltage battery, kept juiced by a turbocharged petrol engine acting purely as a generator—no mechanical link to the wheels.
The result is instant torque for dunes, regen on the descents, and fewer fuel stops than a thirsty V8 buggy, which rather upset tradition and a few purists.
After that win, Audi wrapped the program and shuffled resources toward Formula 1, but the RS Q e-tron proved the hybrid-electric concept can survive the world’s nastiest sandbox.
