Victoria follows the national child restraint rules, but here’s the no-nonsense cheat sheet.
Under 6 months: rearward-facing only.
6 months to under 4 years: rearward- or forward-facing with an inbuilt harness; not in the front seat if the vehicle has 2+ rows.
4 to under 7 years: forward-facing with harness or a booster with a properly adjusted lap-sash belt; front seat only if all rear seats are occupied by under-7s in correct restraints.
7 years and older: booster or adult seatbelt if it fits properly, though the back seat remains the safest spot.
Use an Australian Standard AS/NZS 1754 approved restraint and fit it correctly; when in doubt, get it professionally checked. Consult official guidance from VicRoads for the fine print.
