Electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia are slowly but surely shaking off their reputation as the niche toys of tree-huggers and tech geeks. With government incentives in some states and a growing network of charging stations, they’re inching closer to mainstream acceptance. Expect a typical electric car to boast ranges of 300-500 km on a single charge and acceleration that makes petrol heads weep. Prices for new EVs start around $45,000 AUD and can rocket well beyond $100,000 for luxury models, while used EVs can be found for less if you don’t mind a few thousand kilometres under the belt. For those curious, CarShowroom and Tradingpost are solid places to scope the current market. Remember, while EVs are cleaner and cheaper to run, the upfront cost and charging infrastructure are still hurdles in many parts of the land down under.
