Under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL), cars—new or used—come with consumer guarantees regardless of whatever shiny warranty booklet the seller waves around. If a vehicle isn’t of acceptable quality, fit for purpose, or as described, you’re entitled to a remedy: repair for minor faults, and refund or replacement for a major failure. These rights apply to dealers and manufacturers (demo cars included), and they can outlast the factory warranty if “reasonable durability” says so. Extended warranties can’t sidestep ACL rights and should offer genuine extra value, not just reheated legal soup. Private sales are different: most ACL guarantees don’t apply to a true private seller, though you’re still entitled to clear title. If someone mutters “sorry, out of warranty,” politely remind them ACL doesn’t clock off when the brochure does.
