automatic transmission fluid change Page 45

Thinking about an automatic transmission fluid change? Sensible move—fresh ATF keeps shifts tidy and your gearbox from auditioning as a maraca.

As a rule of thumb, plan it around 60,000–100,000 km (or 4–6 years), sooner if you tow, sit in traffic a lot, or drive in hot conditions—even if the badge says “sealed for life”.

Watch for delayed engagement, shudder, harsh shifts, or fluid that’s brown and smells burnt—those are the gearbox’s passive-aggressive texts.

In Australia, expect roughly AUD $200–$400 for a drain-and-fill, AUD $400–$700+ for a full service with filter/pan clean; CVT/DSG units can run AUD $500–$1,000 due to pricier fluids and parts.

Always use the exact spec fluid, ask for the filter and magnets to be cleaned, and budget 1–2 hours of shop time; check your owner’s manual or service schedule for the official word.
