Read the odometer against the service history rather than on its own, because a well-maintained linehaul prime mover on high kilometres is often a safer buy than a neglected tipper on low ones. Ask whether the vehicle is ex-fleet, ex-council or ex-rental: those units tend to arrive with complete records and a hard but well-documented life.

Then match the body to the work. Tray, tipper, pantech, curtainsider, refrigerated, crane truck and car carrier all price differently on the same cab chassis, so compare like with like. On buses, check seat count, accessibility, air conditioning and when the next inspection falls due. On anything you are serious about, confirm registration and roadworthy status, tyre and brake condition, and whether the repairs quoted in the ad have already been done.
