Start with the ratings rather than the price. GVM and GCM decide what the vehicle can legally carry and tow, and they also decide the licence you need: anything over 4.5 tonne GVM calls for a truck licence, with LR, MR and HR covering rigids and an HC or MC ticket needed for semi-trailers, B-doubles and road trains. Ask whether the vehicle is ex-fleet, ex-council or ex-rental: those units tend to arrive with complete records and a hard but well-documented life.

On buses, check seat count, accessibility, air conditioning and when the next inspection falls due. On anything you are serious about, confirm registration and roadworthy status, tyre and brake condition, and whether the repairs quoted in the ad have already been done.
