best 4wd 2023 Page 6

Hunting the best 4WD of 2023? The “best” depends on your job: for big touring and towing, the Toyota LandCruiser 300 is the comfy tank; for seven-seat adventure without tears at the bowser, the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X hit a sweet spot. Dual-cab utes more your thing? Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux bring capability and accessories galore, with the Ranger feeling more civilised on-road. Fancy some Euro bravado with real chops? The Land Rover Defender is superb, just keep a contingency fund and a sense of humour. Want light and simple? The Suzuki Jimny goes astonishing places—slowly—but you’ll be grinning too hard to care. Test on your actual terrain, match payload and tow ratings to your gear, and spend properly on tyres—they’re where all the heroics meet the dirt.
