If you want to surf dunes rather than shovel them, pick a proper 4x4 with low range, decent clearance and tyres you’re happy to air down. Think Toyota LandCruiser/Prado, Nissan Patrol, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D‑MAX; a Jeep Wrangler or Land Rover Defender also play nicely in the soft stuff. Drop pressures to about 110–140 kPa and keep momentum smooth—more glide, less hero throttle—then switch off overzealous traction control that strangles wheelspin. Long overhangs are sand anchors, so favour good approach/departure angles and a light bargeboard of common sense. Petrol power is fine, diesel torque is handy; either way, recovery points, a snatch strap and a shovel are cheaper than a tow from nowhere. And remember: AWD crossovers will get you to the beach café; the return trip past the soft exit ruts is where they file the complaint.
