best 4x4 ute 2023

“Best” 4x4 ute in 2023 depends on whether you’re towing a caravan, carrying the crew, or just want to look tough at Bunnings. Here are the big hitters, with their charms and quirks laid bare.

• Ford Ranger — Pros: tech-laden cabin, strong towing, V6 grunt available. Cons: early-build niggles/recalls reported, pricier specs and servicing.
• Toyota HiLux — Pros: famed reliability, huge dealer network, top resale. Cons: ride and performance trail the best, older infotainment on many grades.
• Isuzu D‑MAX — Pros: sturdy 3.0L diesel, excellent safety kit, good value. Cons: engine can feel gruff, rear ride can be firm unladen.
• VW Amarok (new‑gen) — Pros: refined drive, punchy V6 options, premium feel. Cons: expensive with option packs, regional dealer coverage not as broad.

Don’t crown a winner—test-drive with your payload, GVM, and towing needs in mind, then buy the one that makes Monday mornings slightly less Monday.
