You want the best car under $40k in Australia for 2023—noble quest, tight budget, big grin potential.

Different tastes, different roads, so consider these standouts without starting a family feud.

• Toyota Corolla Hybrid – Pros: miserly ~4.0 L/100 km, bulletproof reputation; Cons: CVT drone and back-seat/boot space merely fine.
• Kia Seltos Sport – Pros: roomy cabin, big boot, long 7‑year warranty; Cons: base 2.0 can feel breathless and ride’s a touch firm.
• BYD Dolphin – Pros: sharp EV pricing and cheap running; Cons: public charging planning required and long-term resale still settling.

Test-drive them back-to-back, pick the one that suits your commute and parking space, and save the pub debate for who’s shouting next.
