For L‑platers in Australia, you want a car that’s easy to see out of, cheap to fix, and not so powerful it redecorates the kerb.

Perennial sweet spots include the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato, Suzuki Swift and Toyota Yaris—reliable, easy to park, and plentiful on the used market.

Prioritise a 5‑star ANCAP rating (ideally 2017+ protocols) and safety tech like AEB, lane‑keep assist and a reverse camera; skip high‑boost turbos and heavy rear‑drive barges for now.

Manuals teach clutch finesse, but an auto can spare a learner one layer of panic in peak hour; either way, make sure seat and wheel adjust properly and visibility’s decent.

Expect solid used examples from around AUD $8k–$15k, while new small hatches run roughly AUD $23k–$35k drive‑away; insurance for P‑platers varies wildly, so get quotes first.

Check your state’s P‑plate power‑to‑weight rules, get a pre‑purchase inspection, and remember: confidence comes from practice, not a loud exhaust.
