“Best diesel car” depends on the job: towing, hauling, or just sipping fuel on the freeway. For utes, the Ford Ranger V6 diesel is smooth and strong, while the Toyota HiLux 2.8D is tough-as-nails; Ranger packs more tech and torque, HiLux counters with bulletproof resale and a huge support network.

Need a big tourer? The Toyota LandCruiser 300’s twin-turbo V6 diesel tows up to 3500 kg and crushes distances, though it’ll also crush your wallet at purchase time.

Family duties are well served by the Kia Sorento 2.2D and Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2D—both quiet, efficient (around 6–7 L/100 km highway), and roomy; the trade-off is less off-road bravado.

City-friendly but capable? The Mazda CX-5 2.2D mixes sharp handling with frugal running, though its boot is smaller than some rivals.

Pick based on towing needs, cabin space, and service access—and remember, diesels love long runs and timely DPF regens, not endless school-drop crawls.
