best gps for outback australia Page 8

For the Outback, you want a GPS that laughs at corrugations and keeps mapping when reception nicks off for a smoke. Look for offline topo maps, a sunlight-readable 7–8 inch screen, rugged build (IP-rated), and the option for external antenna or satellite comms. Popular picks include the Hema HX-2 (excellent Aussie off-road mapping) and Garmin Tread/Overland (solid routing, topo, and inReach compatibility). A tough tablet running Hema or ExplorOz apps also works—just add proper mounts and 12V power so it doesn’t faint mid-track. Turn-by-turn in towns, topo in the scrub, and waypoints for fuel, water and camps—job done. Pack paper maps as a backup, because batteries love drama.
