In 2020 Australia, the mid-size SUV podium was basically Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Forester, with Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage playing very strong support acts.

The RAV4 (especially the Hybrid) nailed real-world economy and space without feeling like a chore. The CX-5 delivered the most polished drive and cabin, but rear room and boot weren’t the biggest. The Forester was a visibility and safety champ with proper AWD credibility, if a bit conservative inside. Tucson and Sportage offered keen value, long warranties, and comfy ride, though older-gen infotainment was merely fine.

Shortlist those five, pick your poison based on priorities—efficiency (RAV4 Hybrid), handling and finish (CX-5), traction and visibility (Forester), value and warranty (Tucson/Sportage)—then buy with your head, not just the brochure gloss.
