best paint for boat trailer australia Page 5

For Aussie boat trailers, go with a zinc‑rich primer topped by a 2‑pack epoxy or 2‑pack polyurethane marine topcoat—it shrugs off salt, UV, and stone chips.

On bare or rusty steel, de‑scale, degrease, rinse with fresh water, then hit pits and edges with cold‑galv (zinc) spray before priming.

If it’s galvanised, use a proper galv etch/mordant wash or an etch/epoxy primer; fresh hot‑dip galv may need a prep or ageing period to avoid paint peel.

Avoid cheap enamel; it looks pretty until the first dunking, then flakes like a week‑old meat pie.

Mask rollers, hubs and brakes, apply thin coats within the recoat window, and let it cure fully before a saltwater shakedown.

For step areas, add a non‑slip aggregate to the topcoat and thank yourself on the ramp later.
